Yamakoshi is the birthplace of nishikigoi. In the middle of the Edo period, black carp were raised as food. From these black carp, a mutation was discovered in which different colors appeared on their bodies. The people of Yamakoshi found beauty in these multi-colored carp and with their unique sense of aesthetics, developed over 100 different varieties of nishikigoi, discovering new value in these carp.

Hand-dug Tunnel

The people cut a new path in order to survive the harsh winters, not just for themselves, but for the following generations.

Hand-dug Tunnel

With over four meters of snow accumulation, going over the mountain passes in winter was extremely difficult in Yamakoshi. There was tragedy after tragedy of people being stranded in blizzards and dying. In order to overcome these harsh conditions, our predecessors spent 16 years toiling with pickaxes to dig this tunnel. This tunnel is the vessel of the powerful will of our predecessors.
